tiny dress

It's been awhile since I've been to a baby shower. But there appears to be a pregnancy epidemic in our church congregation here and so I've begun the gift planning/making in earnest.

At the last baby shower I attended back in Indiana, Allyson wowed us all with an exquisite, tiny, handmade dress. It incorporated shirring (Allyson's "Poor Man's Smocking" tutorial on Sugar City Journal can be found here) and a beautiful print. It was similar to her dress that was snatched up from the Etsy shop, only on a much smaller scale. (What a fabulous photo!)
Anyway, as I planned a gift for the first baby shower of many to come, I couldn't stop thinking about the dress Allyson made. I decided it couldn't be that hard, and so plunged right in. Why is it that the tinier the clothing, the more mistakes I seem make? I had to add extra material into the dress and pick out numerous mis-sewn seams. A project I thought would take me two hours tops ended up eating up 5 hours+ yesterday. And I still was less than enthused with the end product (though I did get to use one of these new tags that I recently made). Maybe after four baby shower gifts I'll end up with one as charming as Allyson's.

  2. what a coincidence. I've got a baby shower gift to come up with for a little girl on friday, and was just thinking of doing one of these. fingers crossed it doesn't take me 5 hours though.

yours, for the record, is absolutely superb.

  3. Which reminds me, Melissa, I owe you (or Lucy, rather) a dress!

  4. I want to see the finished product, Allyson. And I also want to know how you finish the armholes so nicely - they were my undoing!

  6. Thanks, Robyn! Thankfully it ended up being a big hit at the baby shower. But Allyson, your dress was simply beautiful.
